He who serves the most reaps the most.”
– Jim Rohn

Giving is the key to manifesting our greatest aspirations. When we start giving we state our intention to create positive change. There are many reasons why giving is good for us: it makes us feel happy, it’s good for our health, and it promotes gratitude and cooperation.

In his book Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection, John Cacioppo writes, “the more extensive the reciprocal altruism born of social connection …. the greater the advance toward health, wealth, and happiness.”

This is especially important in entrepreneurship because when you first start on your entrepreneurial venture no one knows what your company is about and why they should care. Giving allows you to connect with the community and start to build your following.

Whether you give your time, expertise, or product, this practice allows you to cultivate a relationship with your audience and can provide an incredible platform for success. Just look at companies like Warby Parker and TOMS that have giving at the core of their business strategy.

Giving has been part of The Accelerator’s DNA since we opened our doors. The staff and board members of The Accelerator give our time and expertise and encourage all of our members to do the same. The amazing thing is that giving is contagious and will create a ripple effect of generosity in the community.

A study by James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego, and Nicholas Christakis of Harvard, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, identified that when one person gives generously it inspires observers to behave generously later, toward different people.

So if you want to create a successful venture that connects with your community and creates long terms positive outcomes, start by giving. It will be your fastest and most enjoyable path to success.

“Giving opens the way for receiving.”
