“Time is the most valuable thing a person can spend.” - Theophrastus

Time is the most important resource available to all of us. As such, how we use our time will play a critical role in the outcomes we create. If we use our time poorly, we will have poor outcomes and inversely, if we use our time wisely, we will have positive outcomes.

How to effectively use time is particularly important for entrepreneurs, as we have an ever-growing to-do list. Therefore, it is vital that we are aware of how we spend our time and measure what outcomes we are generating. John Assaraf, one of the leading mindset and behavior experts in the world, introduced a training program to his real estate team, which led to an increase of $100 million in sales in 6 months. His research identified that the highest performers would spend the most time in front of potential clients. The low performers, when asked why they were not spending more time in front of clients had a list of reasons, which provided excellent justification, but ultimately much lower results.

Therefore, the key is to be intentional with how you spend your time. According to Darren Hardy, “The rhythm of daily action aligned with your goals creates the momentum that separates dreamers from super-achievers.” You have to define your goals clearly and then focus on three main power activities that will help you accomplish those goals. Ignore the distractions that provide busy work but limited outcomes. It is very easy to spend time and justify that we are being useful, constantly checking email, social media, having meetings, etc., but the key is to be laser-focused on what is most important.

The chances of success for entrepreneurs who are able to manage their time effectively will increase dramatically. This will also translate into positive relationships with clients, partners, investors, and team members. The people you deal with will have a greater appreciation for you when they see that you value their time.

It’s important to remember that just like with other habits, you always have the power to make a conscious decision to use your time more wisely.  A few tips that I have found useful in organizing my time in a more effective fashion:

  • Set up your schedule for the week on Sunday
  • Review your schedule for each day the night before
  • Schedule your most important tasks in the morning, as that will be when you are most productive
  • Set specific blocks of time for checking email and social media
  • To ensure that you make the most of your meetings, particularly when engaging new clients or partners, it is important to have a clear purpose. Make sure that you are clear on what you want and what value you are offering to the party you are meeting with.

Once you start to understand the real value of time and start utilizing time to your greatest advantage you will see a significant improvement in your performance and satisfaction. Becoming the true master of your time will be incredibly empowering and transform you into the exceptional entrepreneur you were destined to be.
